How to Share Google Drive Files

There are many ways to Share Google Drive files stored in Google Drive. Let's look at the classic ways and some of the alternative ways.

The Classic Ways

1. From the File Menu in your Document

File > Share—it's as simple as that. As soon as you hit the 'Share' button from the File menu, the Share box will appear.

2. The Share button

The most popular way to Share a doc is to click the blue 'Share' button in the top right of your document.

The Alternative Ways

1. From Google Chat

If you add a file in Google Chat that isn't shared with the people in the chat, Google will give you the option to Share it, clever! This is the same whether you paste a link into the chat or add it via the 'Shared' tab.

2. Sharing a doc via an email in Gmail

Again, if you forget to share a document before you send the link via Gmail, Google will remind you.

3. Sharing a document via another document.

You can link to a doc from another doc, as below we have a Google Doc being linked to via a Google Sheet. If someone on the document doesn't have access to the one that has been linked, the option to Share will appear.
