Teams and Channels in Microsoft Teams can help you organise your team's work. For example, your department could have a team, and within the team, there will be Channels, which are sub-sections to organise conversations and more.

If you need a new workspace to message and share content with colleagues, consider adding a new Channel to your existing Team(s). However, if you need to collaborate with a new group of people, a new Team may be the best option

Here are 5 tips to ensure success with Teams & Channels

  1. Have a ‘General’ or ‘Home’ Channel to host important announcements, team-wide updates, and discussions that do not fit into specific, topic-focused channels.

.

  1. Use @mentions to notify specific people, triggering an alert in their Activity feed. This also ensures they are following that thread/post and will be notified by responses.

  1. Use Follow/Unfollow to make sure you only get notified by what’s relevant. If a colleague @mentions you, you will automatically be following that post/thread. However, if you haven’t been mentioned, you can follow a post/thread by hovering over the message and selecting the 3 dots.

  1. Add a shortcut(s) to relevant SharePoint document libraries to ensure colleagues save documents in the right place.

  1. Use Channel Meetings to keep all meeting data, such as recordings, saved in the Channel, rather than on someone's OneDrive.
