Mystery Solved: Where Did My Hidden Teams Chat Go?

A spring (or autumn) clean has gone too far; you hit the three dots next to a chat and clicked 'Hide' to declutter your list.

Mystery: A few days later, you need to grab an old file link or pick up a project conversation with Lauren. You look for a 'Hidden Chats' tab in Teams, but it doesn't exist. Did you accidentally delete the entire conversation?

First things first, a hidden chat has not been deleted. phew!

Teams removes the thread from your active chat list view (hides it) until one of two things happens:

  1. The other person in the chat messages you again, and the chat will come back into view

  2. You search for the chat and bring it back into view.

The Solution: To unhide a chat and restore your message history

  1. Use the search bar at the top to search for the person's name or group name.

Search dropdown with Lauren Hughes results, tabs for Messages, Files, and Channels, and Press Enter to view all results.

  1. Select their name to open the conversation. This will not unhide the chat in your list. You will see it in italics, with the option to click the 3 dots and unhide it.

Another way is to click 'Show hidden chat history' in the chat itself.
